Pet Peeves-- Top Mistakes from SEO/SEM Experts

The internet is flooded with supposed SEO/SEM experts who claim to know what they are doing. But, they often slip up and make it glaringly obvious that they aren't the SEO/SEM experts they claim to be. To the average Joe, these little things go unnoticed, but to real SEO/SEM professionals, they stick out like a sore thumb. In my opinion, these little things are my top mistakes from SEO & SEM experts-- my pet peeves. When I see them, I feel like reaching through the computer and smacking the person on the other end.

So here's my pet peeves list of the top mistakes from SEO/SEM experts:

1. Improper Use of Hashtags
I see it all over Facebook all of the time-- the improper use of hashtags. Yes, I know there are many people who link their Facebook account to their Twitter account, so they feel by using the hashtags on their Facebook account, it saves them the step of having to update their Twitter account manually. To me, when I see hashtags on Facebook, it screams unprofessional and really annoys me. I will stop following a person if they use hashtags on Facebook. They are pointless. Then, there are people who just use the hashtags on their Facebook account because everyone else is doing it, but they have no understanding of why a hashtag is even used. Hashtags are for Twitter, not Facebook. If you're going to use them, learn how to use them correctly.

2. Fixing Bad SEO
All too often I'm hired to fix sites that haven't been optimized correctly. I say it time and time again, you may want to save money, but you will get what you pay for. If you're going to pay a professional to optimize your website have it done correctly the first time. Don't waste time by hiring someone just because they are cheap. Nothing irritates me more than having to redo a website because the person before me had no clue what they were doing.

3. Forgetting Metas and Tags
When I receive a call from someone asking my why their site isn't getting any traffic, the first thing I ask them is if their Metas and Tags are filled out. Many times they aren't. You can't expect your website to become successful and lucrative if you forget one of the most important aspects of search engine optimization. Please, please don't forget to fill out your Metas and tags!

4. Keyword Stuffing
Another top SEO pet peeve of mine is keyword stuffing. Yes, you want your site to rank well, but overdoing it on the keywords just kills any quality to your content. Keyword stuffing makes your content difficult and awkward to read, not to mention search engines hate it! I would much rather have a site with a low keyword density than a site stuffed with keywords.

5. Bad Anchor Texts
I also can't stand to see bad anchor texts, especially after Google Penguin. "Click here" and "read more" don't do any good. In my opinion, it also lowers your credibility. If you're going to anchor text, make sure you choose relevant words (hopefully, keywords) to link too. And, don't forget to only link to quality sites.
