Search Engine Optimization: How to Create Killer SEO Titles

Many people forget that search engine optimization also includes optimizing the titles of content and web pages. Correctly optimized titles are essential for search engine result's page (SERP) ranking. Combining SEO with a catchy title, not only increases your online visibility, but also entices readers to pick your content over others.

When optimizing web page titles, you must also remember, in most cases, your title will become that page's URL. This must be kept in mind because a shorter page URL is better for traffic than a longer URL. When creating optimized titles for content, it is important to create a title that correctly describes the topic of the content, while catching the readers attention.

Optimizing Titles

When optimizing web page titles, it is best to pick a long tail key phrase (consisting of 3 or more words); whereas, when creating a content title, it is best to either use a long tail key phrase or to use one or two key phrases (consisting of 2 words). If you only use one key phrase, you will also need a keyword to use within the title.

After choosing your keywords/phrases you must use catchy words that make your title POP. A catchy title encourages readers to pick your content over others when searching for information. There are many words that have shown to trigger a more positive response among readers. Some of these words include: top, free, danger, avoid, best of, and tips. Incorporating these attention grabbing words within correctly optimized titles will ensure your content will receive higher traffic than improperly optimized titles.

How to Optimize Titles

Optimizing titles is very simple if you are using a long tail key phrase. All you have to do is simply create a title. Things begin to get a little trickier when you are using two key phrases or a combination of a key phrase and a keyword. When creating titles with either two key phrases or a keyword and a key phrase, never place the two next to each other. You want them to be separated by a word of two. For example, if your key phrases are "publishing information" and "freelance writers" an ideal title would be:

Free Publishing Information for Online Writers.

Be careful not to over space the keywords/phrases because this will create a lengthy title, which can decrease traffic and cause a reader confusion.

Tips for Creating Titles

When creating optimized titles, many people make the mistake of using the same title for more than one piece of online content. You NEVER want to do this because then you will competing with yourself. Duplicate content titles will increase your traffic competition and lower each content's traffic in the process. To stay safe, always create unique titles.

Readers like to see short and simple titles to avoid any confusion. For this reason, avoid creating lengthy titles. When creating titles, keep them as short and simple as possible. Make sure the title accurately describes the content or web page. Do not stuff extra words (fluff) into your titles because this causes the title to become awkward, which as a result will turn readers away.

Search Engine Optimization: Introduction to Keywords and Phrases

by Alyssa Ast

Search engine optimization (SEO) revolves around the use of keywords and phrases. Keywords/phrases are the word or phrase a person types into a search engine to find information about a certain topic. For example, if someone is looking for information about planting a garden, they might type in "gardening tips," "how to plant a garden," or "gardening." These are keywords and phrases.

Introduction to Keywords and Phrases
Using keywords and phrases within your content is essential because it allows search engines to properly index content. With the correct keywords/phrases and density level, your content can be ranked within the top 10 results on a search engine's results page (SERP). You want to achieve this because when searching for information the majority of people only look at the top 10 results and then continue on searching with a different word or phrase. To decrease your competition and to improve your chances of landing in one of the top 10 spots, you need to make sure you choose the best keywords/phrases possible.

Choosing Keywords/Phrases
To choose keywords/phrases, it is best to use a word tracker tool. A word tracker tool allows you to type in the word or phrase you would like to use and see how many times per day (hits) that word/phrase is typed into a search engine. For example, if you type in the phrase "writing tips" it may receive 57 hits per day. There are many free word tracker tools available. I like Google AdWords and Word Tracker the best.

When you choose keywords/phrases you want to choose those that have a low hits number. This is important because the lower the hits number is, the lower the competition will be. As a result, you have a higher chance of ranking on the top 10 SERP. It is best to choose keywords/phrases that have less than 50 hits per day and never more than 100.

When choosing your keywords/phrases you will need to pick one long tail phrase, which is composed of 3 or more words. You will need to pick at least 2 key phrases, which consist of 2 words, and a few keywords that are relevant to your content.

SEO Website Review: AngelaAtkinson.com

by Alyssa Ast

Author of The Practical Freelance Writers Guide to Author Websites, journalist, and freelance writer Angela Atkinson, granted me the opportunity to review her author website for SEO success. Her website, which she designed herself, is used to increase her online visibility and client potential, as well as providing readers with more information about herself.

Website: AngelaAtkinson.com

Search Engine Ranking
Angela Atkinson is doing a great job optimizing her site. When typing her name into google, it ranks number 1, which is exactly where you want your site to be. It is also ranked number 1 on Yahoo as well. She is clearly doing an excellent job of optimizing her site to land number 1 on two of the major search engine's results page.

URL Optimization
A websites' URLs are vital for a site's traffic success. Angela has done a excellent job maintaining static URLs for quick search engine indexing and SERP ranking. She correctly hyphenated pages that have multiple keywords within the URL, which makes SERP ranking more of a success.

Her page titles correctly match the page's URL, which is essential for increasing traffic. Both the titles and URLs include the exact keywords/phrases, increasing her site keyword density levels and ranking status.

Keywords and Density
Here is a basic summary of Angela's keywords/phrase density level:

Keyword/Phrase-Number of Times Used -Density
Louis freelance writer -3-0.67%
writer editor researcher -3- 0.67%
editor researcher -2 -0.44%
search engine optimization -2 -0.44%
Angela Atkinson st -2 -0.44%

freelance writer -13 -2.89%
Angela Atkinson -5 -1.11%
Louis freelance -3 -0.67%
st Louis -3 -0.67%

write -19- -4.22%
writer -17 -3.78%
writing -14 -3.11%
freelance -14 -3.11%
project -10 -2.22%

Angela has done a great job optimizing her site with keywords/phrases. Her density level for the majority of her keywords is almost perfect. I do, however, recommended she uses her long tail keywords at least 1-2 more times within her site to promote her traffic even further.

Currently, she has 65 keywords that occur more than 2 times within her site, with 20 key phrases and 5 long tail key phrases.

Meta's and Tags
Angela should ensure her top ranking key phrases are used in the appropriate meta tags section and once within her meta description. She also needs to ensure 2-5 of the top ranking keywords are included in these sections, as well as on the pages where they are appropriate.

Updates
Angela updates her blog at least once a month, which is perfect because a site must be updated regularly in order for it to maintain it's SERP's ranking. Angela incorporates her keywords/phrases into her blog postings as well, which of course increases her visibility.

Linking
Angela has done an excellent job of utilizing her internal linking abilities. Her high level of internal links are sure to increase her on site traffic. She has done a great job utilizing external links as well. These external links draw traffic to her other sites and offer original sites to link back to her website.

Recommendations:
Angela's site is nearly perfect and despite these minor flaws, her site continues to maintain the number 1 ranking on 2 search engines. However, I do recommend she slightly increases the density level for her long tail keywords. Also, utilizing subtitles that include 2 keywords/phrases will also boost her density levels.

I also recommend her external links open to a new window. This is important because you can loose traffic because your site basically becomes lost if a new window does not open. With two separate windows, readers are more likely to continue browsing your site, increasing your internal traffic.

Introduction to Search Engine Marketing

Search engine marketing (SEM) is a traffic increasing tool, which is used in combination with search engine optimization (SEO). After online content has been properly optimized with SEO, links are incorporated within the content and keywords, resulting in search engine marketing. SEM involves strategically placing hyperlinks within content to increase online traffic, and these links can even be used to generate a profit. SEM also involves using links in a certain method to receive links from an original source back to your online content.

Benefits of Search Engine Marketing

The benefits of search engine marketing are very similar to the benefits of search engine optimization despite the different methods used to generate traffic and income. Traffic is increased to online content with SEM because quality links within content increase the content's SERP ranking.

Links within the content can also be used to generate a profit. You can generate a profit with the links within the content by increasing your page views. Plus, many companies pay you to include links within your content. Each time one of these links is clicked on, you are paid for the number of clicks that link receives.

Other traffic benefits of search engine marketing involve using back links to your content. Back links involve original sources linking back to your content, increasing your traffic and profit. Back links can be acquired in a number of ways. You can post your links on sites and forums, or you can receive back links from anonymous sources that wish to share your content with others.

While search engine marketing and search engine optimization are considered to be two separate online tools, the combination of the two is often referred to as SEMPO, which is just a simpler way to state both methods are being used. As with SEO, companies and clients seek those that have SEM knowledge to improve their company's online presence and profit. With knowledge of both skills, the specialized niche you can offer clients and companies increases, increasing the demand for your skill and your profit capabilities.
